Schoeps MK 4 Cardioid Capsule The MK 4 is Schoeps' best-selling capsule. It offers the highest sound quality, flat frequency response, optimal rejection of rear-incident sound, and a directional pattern that remains constant throughout the audio frequency range. In the diffuse sound field it shows only a mild rise around 10 kHz; the sonic impression thus remains free of coloration even when sound is arriving from all sides at once. The sonic impression is thus free of coloration whether sound is arriving at the front or at the sides of the microphone, as well as for diffuse sound (reverberation) in a room. For those who dare to use their ears rather than just their eyes when choosing a vocal microphone, a Colette microphone using the MK 4 capsule can be a remarkable instrument. Thus a complete microphone of the Colette series comprises any of the twenty available types of capsules combined with an amplifier. The Schoeps CMC 6 Amplifier is designed for standard 48- and 12-Volt phantom powering. Its circuitry recognizes the supply voltage and adjusts itself automatically. Its performance characteristics remain essentially the same either way; mainly, the difference is that the current drawn at 12 Volts is greater than at 48 Volts. However, the 12-Volt mode consumes less power and might be preferred for battery-powered recording. Since only a minuscule amount of current is contained in this signal, amplification of the current is required. To avoid interference to the signal on the way from the microphone to the input of the mixer or preamp, the signal is conveyed at low impedance and in balanced form. The CMC 6 amplifier offers a symmetrical, transformerless, direct-coupled Class A output stage with low impedance, low distortion, and high freedom from interference. Please note: The two amplifiers in a stereo pair of microphones should be of the same type. On request, Schoeps can select "matched pairs" of capsules with equal sensitivity and frequency response for critical applications, at slight additional cost. Schoeps Cut 1 Filter The CUT 1 or CUT 2 is inserted between the capsule and the microphone amplifier. The CUT filter performs two tasks: First, it prevents the effect of infrasonic disturbances from being passed on to any succeeding device. In particular, pressure-gradient transducers (directional microphones) produce very high infrasonic signal levels when exposed to wind. These can saturate an input transformer or an amplifier stage even before the audible portion of the disturbance becomes noticeable. To avoid this, a very sharp (24 dB/oct) infrasonic filter is permanently engaged. It has only a negligible effect on speech, which is the principal field of application for the CUT 1 (cutoff frequency = 60 Hz). The CUT 2's infrasonic filter is an octave lower (i.e. 30 Hz), and has no audible effect on speech pickup whatsoever. The second task is to offset proximity effect and/or to improve speech intelligibility in reverberant rooms by means of an additional 6 dB/oct rolloff. By turning a recessed thumbwheel the user can vary the frequency at which this begins to have an effect, and thus tailor the low-frequency response as required. TB-1 Tea Ball Microphone

Introducing the model TB-1 Tea Ball Microphone by ZVEX Effects, designed for specialty use on stage and in the studio. The special circuitry of the TB-1 causes it to reject sound from sources that are further than an inch or so away from the grille. This allows the mic to be placed on stage in a loud environment and plugged directly into a guitar amp that's turned up to a level that would cause any normal microphone to squeal furiously. In the studio when recording a guide vocal track in a live recording room, the TB-1 will reject the amplifiers and drums. This way the guide vocal can be used for rough mixes without fear of hearing other instruments or room ambience loudly in the background. Why is it called the Tea Ball Microphone? It's actually built inside a stainless steel tea ball, the kind of device used to make a hot mug of goodness from a tin of loose tea. The clip that holds the tea ball shut is used to open it up to change two CR2032 batteries. These have a life of about 100 hours and presently cost less than $10 for 20 units on Amazon (Sony CR2032). The mesh on the tea ball will never chip your teeth like an SM58 because it's quite springy. That's important because the best sound from this mic comes from putting your mouth right up against it. The entire mic disassembles easily by unplugging the electronics and lifting out the internal foam windscreen which can be washed in soapy water. Be sure to dry it before reassembling. The mesh ball is suspended inside a thick copper hoop using three springs for a look like something from the early part of last century. The TB-1's output level is similar to that of a guitar. It has a 1/4" female jack that runs smoothly parallel to the microphone stand. The mic is powered up by being plugged in and turned on with a switch on the back. When the mic is unplugged, the battery will not drain no matter which position the power switch is in. When the mic is live, an LED gently glows near the switch, visible from FOH so that the sound engineer can be sure it's working. Enjoy!
